Asia Pacific College (APC)’s School of Engineering (SoE) Executive Director Leonardo Samaniego, Jr. served as a distinguished speaker during the Plastics for Resilience Project Launch at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in Makati City last October 12, 2024.
His presentation, titled “Leveraging Technology and Research to Transform Plastic Waste Problems into a Pathway for Sustainable Innovation and Value Creation,” highlighted APC’s efforts to address the pressing issue of plastic waste.
Mr. Samaniego emphasized that plastic waste is a critical global challenge, with the Philippines being one of the top contributors. He pointed out that “amidst this problem lies an extraordinary opportunity” to use technology and research to convert plastic waste into sustainable solutions.
Mr. Samaniego highlighted the efforts of the School of Engineering through its environmental sustainability framework and research initiatives, such as the development of an automated eco-bricking machine designed to enhance the efficiency of eco-brick production, as well as EcoRam, a system that encourages recycling by allowing users to convert recyclable materials into virtual currency, known as RamCoins.
During the project launch, Mr. Samaniego also highlighted the research of SoE Faculty Member Engr. Einstein Yong’s team titled Development of Cultivating System for Polyethylene Plastic-Eating Wax Worm (Galleria Mellonella). The study aims to develop an incubator that replicates optimal conditions for cultivating wax worms, which are known for their ability to biodegrade polyethylene plastics.
“This research work plays a crucial role in enabling wax worms to thrive in the unique climate of the Philippines,” Mr. Samaniego notes as he explains its potential to address environmental challenges.
He also emphasized the importance of collaboration and education in addressing plastic waste. “Together, we can lead the charge in leveraging technology and research to create a future where plastic waste is no longer a burden but a resource for innovation and growth,” says Mr. Samaniego as he invited the audience to partner with APC in developing innovative solutions.
